How to Master ‘Less Is More’
It’s no secret that we are huge believers in ‘less is more.’ And a question we often get is: How do you accomplish an effortless, minimalist look when styling? Here are a few key principles we swear by.
1. Embrace negative space
Yes, that’s right! Coco Chanel once said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” We approach styling the same way. For us, it’s always better to leave ample negative space than to fill a room with items that compete with each other. That can get chaotic and make a space feel overwhelming instead of the clean + calm vibe we love. What we want is a simple, sophisticated + approachable atmosphere.
2. Layer, mix, + match
Don’t be afraid to play with textures, neutral tones, and height. We love using items such as tall ceramic vases, matte books, and soft throws to create dimension + warmth when styling. However, be sure to keep minimalism in mind and refer to point #1, always!
3. Use items that have meaning
With fewer items, you can really focus on the stuff you love. Infuse pieces into your everyday spaces that are meaningful so that your home reflects the places you’ve been, the people you love, and your passions. Edit out things that don’t bring you joy or great memories because that’s what being home should be all about!
Now, you’re ready to create a calming, sophisticated + approachable space. Happy styling + editing!
